If one is having any weakness in the game known as chess then it can be easily predicted in comparison to checkers. Checkers literature is full of weakness details. It does not mean that it is simply a weakness collection like following description. Following are the some general opening weaknesses.
Image 1 - Glasgow
Watching, Glasgow 11 to 15, 23 to 19, 8 to 11, 22 to 17, 11 to 16 and Glasgow 24 to 20, 16 to 23, 27 to 11, 7 to 16, 20 to 11, 3 to 7 in image 1. Movement of White can be 11 to 8, 28 to 24 and 4 to 11 where 28 to 24 is perfect. Back row of Black is extremely weekend. But white does not have any chance for taking advantage of this weakness.
In image 1 single corner of Black is weakened by Black himself. The reason for this weakness is movement of pieces far from single corner. When one moves a piece, a weakness for that particular square is created from where it is moved. Well now in this situation, white is possessing double corner of weak nature and there will be an effort made by Black for trading off more number of pieces in double corner of White for making it more weaker.
This approach tells the fact regarding attack that one can easily attack on double corner in comparison to single corner. It tells about the safe moves like 4 to 8 or 29 to 25 that provide very less weakness to single corner as sometimes weakness could be exploited.
Image 2 - Double Cross
Image 3 - Dyke
Watch double cross of image 2 which is 9 to 14, 23 to 18? And 14 to 23, 27 to 18* showing weak opening of double cross. Double corner of White is weakened by himself where as Black is having sufficient pieces on board’s that side which can help him regarding trading off pieces present in double corner of White. So it is a very difficult situation for White.
Now watch this Dyke of 11 to 15, 22 to 17, 15 to 19, 23 to 16,12 to 19, 24 to 15, 10 to 19 in image 3. Here Dyke is a word of Scottish language which means wall. An effort from Black side will be there for establishing pieces on square number ten and fifteen to form a wall. This Dyke is responsible for attacking on double corner of white. A force can be made on Black by White for weakening the single corner through 27 to 23(22 to 18 having better situation), 8 to 12, 23 to 16, 12 to 19, 31 o 27, 4 to 8, 27 to 23, 8 to 12, 23 to 16, 12 to 19, 32 to 27, 3 to 8, 27 to 23, 8 to 12, 23 to 16 and 12 to 19. Black could be the winner of this game in spite of having weak single corner as double corner of white is weak.
The piece on Dyke on 19th position is having weakness and strength both. It can be said strength because it immobilizes double corner of white by attacking and can be said a weakness as defended approach is required otherwise pieces could be lost.
Establishment of piece at 19th position and in case of white 14th position is considered as most popular approach for attacking as well as aggressively creating any weakness in opponent’s side.
Image 4 - Edinburgh
Image 5 - Switcher
Watch the Edinburgh from 9 to 13. It is known as weakest move under first move category as double corner gets weakens through it and piece immobilizes to 13 makes it mere spectator in place of a participant. White control to the center is given by it by moving from 22 to 18 which is considered a strongest one. One side where center position holding in chess is considered very strong on the other hand it is of very little use in checkers as opponent has chance regarding trading off these center pieces at her/his leisure. In image 4 Black is facing some difficulty n trading off center piece of White. Carry on 11 to 15, 18 to 11, 8 to 15, 21 to 17, 13 to 22, 25 to 11, 7 to 16 makes White strong. Black should permit Dyke idea of White after 9 to 13, 22 to 18 along with 12 to 16, and 18 to 14 or 18 to 14, 10 to 15. White contains many other wonderful options in place of that dyke idea.
Watch the Switcher from 11 to 15, 21 to 17(weak) and 9 to 13 in image 5. Don’t you think that double corner is weakened by 9 to 13? Yes but single corner of White is cramped in a serious manner. Player is bound to manage this. Possibility of limited White plan can be seen by playing Switcher of White side only few times. White is unable to attack on double corner of Black through this single corner of cramped nature. Same condition is there with Black in 12 to 16, 24 to 20, 8 to 12. Single corner of Black is also cramped like White.
Image 6 - White Doctor
Have a look on White Doctor for 10 to 14, 22 to 18 12 to 16(weak) and 24 to 20, 16 to 19*, 23 to 16, 14 to 23, 26 to 19, 8 to 12* in image 6. This is known as gambit like chess. Piece down is seen in Black along with badly cramped double corner of White. Opening of Black can be difficult because of difficulty in regaining piece.
Image 7 - Bristol
See Bristol for 11 to 16, 22 to 18, 8 to 11, 25 to 22, 16 to 20 in image 7 where 16 to20 is weak because of immobility of 20th location piece and distance from center becomes great but also provide prevention from 24 to 20 that may cramp single corner of Black.16 to 20 or in case of White 17 to 13 belongs to general category moves which helps in attacking double corner.
Image 8 - Single Corner
Watch single corner’s bad variation like 11 to 15, 22 to 18, 15 to 22, 26 to 17? Where 25 to 18 is something better in image 8. 26 to17? is indicating an approximate loss. White has tied the center that always not going to create a problem. Position of white is broken by him through by providing a gap at middle position. This is generally considered a weak kind of opening where movement of piece is happening on 26 position 7 position. It is termed as apex piece. Many times it is seen that movement of piece known as apex is generally weaker in comparison to other modes. Some exceptions are also there.
Some other kinds of opening variations that have relation with center position are 12 to 16, 23 to 19? as well as 11 to 16, 23 to 19?. These were generally considered losses with having draw possibility through 11 to 16 and 23 to 19?. In spite of not looking bad yet can show worse situation. If player had made any weak move then he needs to deal with opponent’s policy in place of implementing own plans.
Image 9 - Octopus
Watch the Octopus for 10 to 15, 21 to 17, 7 to 10 where movement of apex is weak, 17 to 14, 10 to 17*, 22 to 13, 11 to 16* for other losing moves 23 to 19 , 16 to 23, 26 to 10, 6 to 15, 13 to 6, 1 to 10* for strong part in image 9. Movement of Apex does not look bad immediately. But forced moves are creating a difficult condition.. White should have ability of attacking on double corner of Black.
Initiative is very essential in the game of chess and being 1st player is considered as an advantage. But this concept is not fit in the game of checkers. First movement can be an advantage but however, the game continued although there is possibility that moves can be weak. Apart from this in few situations of moving first can create weakness for the person. Now if you think that something can be accomplished, moving first can be of great advantage.
Opponent offers you a draw. Do you agree?
